SHORE EXCURSION INFORMATION
ICY STRAIT POINT SHORE EXCURSIONS
Icy Strait Point is located near the city of Hoonah, the
largest native Tlingit Indian settlement in Alaska, and very
near Glacier Bay National Park. Home to a historic cannery,
the port's connection to the sea is strong. Locals share the
sea with humpback whales, orcas, Dall porpoises, seals,
sea otters, halibut and all five species of Pacific salmon. It
is not uncommon to spot a humpback or an orca while
walking along the shore.

ATV EXPEDITION
Experience the majesty amidst the mountains of Chichagof
Island when you embark on your rugged adventure on the
ATV Expedition. Board your bus for a ride through the
Tlingit village of Hoonah en route to your departure site
high in the mountains of Chichagof Island. Once there and
after a safety briefing, join your local guides as you board
your 4x4 Kawasaki Mule for a rugged ride viewing the
forest, valleys and mountainous scenery. Designated
drivers will have opportunities to switch driving
responsibilities.

Minimum age to participate is 10 years old. All drivers must
present a valid driver's license. This is a remote trail
experience and will be bumpy and all participants must be
guided accordingly. This tour is not recommended for
those guests with back or neck problems or pregnant
women.

FOREST & NATURE TRAM
Join in an exploration of the Southeast Alaska Rain Forest.
Your excursion departs from Icy Strait Point where you will
board a covered wheeled tram and travel through an old
growth forest and along the shores of Icy Strait. Your local
guides will describe the many plants and animals that
inhabit these rainforests and their importance in
maintaining the delicate balance of a healthy temperate
rainforest. Your tour includes a visit to view a bald eagle
nest where you may gaze at the nest constructed amidst
the forest's canopy of old growth trees. Keep your eyes
open for other land and marine mammals that are so
abundant in the area.

Comfortable walking shoes are recommended as this tour
includes an optional approximate 30 yards of walking over
uneven terrain. Your wheeled tram will be traveling over
remote trails and the roads will be bumpy. Don't forget your
binoculars and camera!

GLACIER BAY FLIGHTSEEING
Experience the grandeur of Glacier Bay National Park and
Preserve, one of America's premier natural wilderness
areas. The scenery of the park encompasses 3.3 million
acres and is part of the largest internationally protected
area in the world. Departing from the Hoonah Airport by
fixed-wing plane, you will fly across Icy Strait, the main
waterway connecting Southeast Alaska to Seattle. Fly over
the feeding grounds for endangered humpback whales at
Point Adolphus. At the entrance to Glacier Bay, your
pilot/guide will point out Lemesurier Island. The massive
glaciers almost reached this point before beginning their
rapid retreat just 250 years ago. A giant sheet of ice
covered all the area you will see. As your flight continues,
see how the de-glaciated terrain is developing into lush
rain forests of Spruce and Hemlock that line the shores of
Glacier Bay. Fly over waterfalls, lakes, deep crevasses and
azure blue meltwater pools of Glacier Bay National Park
and visit the world as it was at the end of the Ice Age.

memories of your Glacier Bay experience. Approximately

HALIBUT FISHING
Board a cabin cruiser and embark on the ultimate fishing
excursion to the rich waters of Icy Strait. After purchasing
your license and receiving a safety orientation, it's an
approximate 30 minute ride to the hottest halibut fishing
spots known only to locals. You will receive approximately
2.5 hours of fishing during this excursion. The waters of Icy
Strait are teeming with halibut, making angling conditions
ideal. Icy Strait is known for its' abundance of marine life,
be sure to bring your camera and plenty of film for
once-in-a-lifetime photo opportunities.

Chances for catching fish are good, however not
guaranteed. Minimum age to participate is 6 years old;
children under 13 years old are required to wear a life vest
while onboard the vessel. Deck or rubber soled shoes must
be worn on the boat. Bring warm layered, waterproof
clothing. Alaska State Law requires a valid one-day fishing
license; bring cash for the $20 fishing license and the $10
King salmon stamp (seasonal). Custom packing is available
for an additional fee. If you land a fish and choose not to
release it immediately you are responsible for processing
and shipping the fish home. Please read and understand
the information provided by the tour operator before
catching any fish. Shipping is not available outside the
continental US. We regret that fish cannot be stored on
board the ship.

HOONAH BIKE TRIP
After being fitted for your bicycle and helmet and receiving
a safety briefing, begin your cycling trek. Learn what day to
day life is like for the residents of the tiny coastal village of
Hoonah when you take an intimate bike ride through
Alaska's largest Tlingit settlement. Your local guides will
lead you along the coastline as you explore this small
coastal village that is home to nearly 900 residents. Learn
how the people and community survived the fire of 1944
that burned the entire community to the ground as well as
the dislocation of the Huna Tlingits from Glacier Bay when
the mighty glaciers advanced over their village sites. Be
sure to keep watch for the abundance of wildlife that
inhabits the waters and forests surrounding the village.

Participants must be at least 10 years old and 54-inches
tall. Closed-toed athletic shoes and layered clothing
appropriate for inclement weather are recommended. Rain
gear is provided, if necessary. This tour involves
approximately 300 yards of walking and 8 miles of cycling
on flat dirt and paved roads. Participants should be aware
that there are certain inherent risks involved in any cycling
excursion.

HOONAH SIGHTSEEING & TRIBAL DANCE
Hoonah is Alaska's largest Tlingit village and you will have
an opportunity to glimpse into authentic Alaska lifestyle
while sightseeing and immerse yourself in the local culture
during an interactive performance. Your local guide will
describe how this coastal community came to be when the
Huna Tlingits were forced from their ancestral lands of
Glacier Bay by the advancing glaciers. Learn of the epic
fire of 1944 that burned the entire village to the ground,
how locals drive on the Alaska Marine Highway, and many
other aspects about life in this small village. Learn how the
fishing, timber and tourism industries help support and
sustain Hoonah.

Following the sightseeing of Hoonah, the Huna Tlingit
share their history with you through interpretive song,
dance and storytelling. This is your opportunity to absorb
the rich history and local culture and join in a traditional
celebration. Please do not photograph or videotape the
performance. Performers will be available for photos
directly after the performance.
